Built on reclaimed land, the West Kowloon Cultural District offers sweeping views of Victoria Harbour. Over the past decade, major art and cultural venues have opened here one after another, and the nearby high-speed rail station has made the area even more accessible. It has become one of Hong Kong’s most important modern cultural landmarks.
Hong Kong has dedicated prime waterfront space to art and culture. West Kowloon now hosts multiple theaters, performance spaces, and museums, with world-class exhibitions and events. Major venues open to the public include the Hong Kong Palace Museum, M+ Museum, and the Xiqu Centre.
This guide follows an art and exhibition theme, mapping a cultural city walk through West Kowloon. It’s a great way to experience modern Hong Kong culture at the intersection of East and West.

M+ Museum
From MTR Kowloon Station Exit C, cross Austin Road to reach the east entrance of the West Kowloon Cultural District. Museum Drive connects several major venues, and the first stop is the M+ Museum. As a leading visual arts institution in Asia, M+ is one of the world’s largest museums of contemporary visual culture. Its harbour-facing curtain wall features LED displays that show moving image works visible from across the water, making it a striking new landmark on the Victoria Harbour skyline.

M+ houses more than 8,000 works, including a major donation from collector Uli Sigg that documents four decades of Chinese contemporary art. In addition to exhibitions, you can grab a coffee and head to the rooftop garden for harbor breezes and wide-open views.

Hong Kong Palace Museum
In contrast to M+’s contemporary focus, the inverted trapezoid-shaped Hong Kong Palace Museum spotlights Chinese historical artifacts. Opened in June 2022, it has displayed hundreds of precious objects from the Palace Museum, including pieces shown in Hong Kong for the first time. Five permanent exhibition halls cover Forbidden City architecture and court life culture, with rotating displays. Light-sensitive works such as calligraphy and paintings are often shown only briefly before returning to Beijing for preservation.

Artifacts from the Palace Museum arrive in Hong Kong in batches on a rotating schedule. Each new rotation draws strong interest and gives visitors the rare chance to see imperial treasures outside Beijing.

Inside is an experimental performance space that regularly collaborates with artists from around the world. One standout feature: the western wall can become a giant outdoor screen for lawn movie nights.

FreeSpace sits at the heart of the Art Park. The ground-floor mural by artist Calvin Ho—featuring lively, whimsical monster figures—has become a popular photo stop in the district.
